How Much Does Post-Secondary Education Cost?

Before we get into how you are going to pay for school, you need to know how much it will cost! The costs of continuing your education after high school can be expensive, yet you will see great returns in your investment over the life of your career!

Since costs vary by institution, please make sure to inquire about the cost breakdown of the school you wish to attend before you send in your application.

COST BREAKDOWN:

1. TUITION. In Canada, the average full-time student attending a post-secondary institution can expect to pay $2,500 to $8,000 each year in tuition alone. This does not include living expenses, books, supplies, transportation, and all other expenses that add to the grand total. Variations in tuition depend on:
Program: Some programs simply cost more, so look into these costs up front.
Co-op: These programs last longer, and therefore cost more over the long-term. However, there is the added benefit of being paid for work terms and gaining valuable work experience.
Class Type: Depending on lecture formats, required time in labs and number of teaching assistants, the classes you choose may have additional fees.
Other: Cost also varies depending on the type of institution (e.g. College, University, Career College, Trade School, and CEGEP) and whether your school is located in an urban vs. rural area. The number of years to complete the Program also affects costs.
2. STUDENT FEES. These are compulsory fees, not included in tuition, used to fund services, clubs, events, etc. More specifically, many institutions charge Athletic fees, Health Services fees, Student Association fees, fees to write exams and fees to become members of professional associations.
3. LIVING EXPENSES. These include rent, food, electricity, transportation, telephone, Internet - everything you need to live while you are attending school. Although residence is a great option, it can more than double your yearly cost, as it can cost upwards of $8,000 (including a meal plan).
4. BOOKS. Although every student is required to buy specific books for each class they enroll in, there are options available that affect how much you pay for such books.
School Bookstore: The books here are the most current, yet also quite expensive. Sometimes they do sell used books, so ask around.
Second-hand Books: You can visit used bookstores, shop online, borrow from friends that have already taken that course, and keep an eye out for signs or leaflets advertising used books being sold on campus.
Online Bookstores: This is a great way to buy both new and used books. However, shipping can take a while so order well in advance. Also, make sure you buy the edition that your course specifies (otherwise, you may be missing important information).
