Funding For Secular Pro-life Groups Aborted: York University
A decision by York University’s York Federation of Students (YFS) to deny club funding to non-religious pro-life groups has the Toronto university split on the issue of free speech, the Excalibur reported on Friday.
The decision, which was ratified by the Canadian Federation of Students, would deny funding to secular pro-life groups on campus while continuing to fund groups whose views on abortion are primarily fueled by religion.
Secular pro-life groups will not be discouraged from continuing operations, with a representative from Students for Bioethical Awareness at York (SBA) saying that the group would continue operating despite the financial setback. The SBA also expressed concern that students who supported pro-life would feel underrepresented on campus, and questioned the YFS’s decision to cut funding to a group just because they have no religious affiliation.
For now, it appears that secular pro-life groups will have to seek funding elsewhere.
