Get An Education, Save Canada!

A post on Dale Kirby’s Post-Secondary Education Blog yesterday drew attention to the fact that we do tend follow in our parents’ footsteps, at least where education is concerned.

In a report released by the Canada Millenium Scholarship Foundation, 81 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds whose parents have university degrees enroll in postsecondary education, compared to 53 per cent for people whose parents’ formal education stopped with a high school diploma.

Roughly 40 per cent of 20 year olds showed no sign of attending a college, vocational or university program in 2003. Chances are, if your parents attended university, you’re probably there right now; and that’s good thing, for several reasons.
Kirby points out that the future of Canadian industry rests on us young’uns being smart-like, as most job creation in the future will require a diploma or degree of some sort. That, coupled with the expected post-2011 youth decline following the baby bust of the 1990’s, means that young, educated labour will be in short supply as our parents continue to grow older.
To summarize: get an education. The country depends on it!
